Live from the Basement - Not Fade Away

by Jimmy Cocktail 23. July 2009 14:05

The second in my continuing series of videos of me playing guitar. Each time I put one of these together I learn a little bit more about the technical aspects of video and audio recording, editing and display. This time I learned how to get a tru HD picture captured and uploaded. I changed the lighting, this time I used more fill lighting and no overhead lighting. It's better, but there are still some awkward shadows. This is what happens when I resort to borrowed and repurposed house lighting rather than breaking down and investing in a light kit. I'm also a bit pissed about the title card being a touch messed up; I have no idea what happened there.

The audio is much better this time around. I'm able to use my mixing board and stage mics to capture the sound into the video camera. I'd go direct to a computer except that my cruddy little laptop is so old that my audio software (Audacity is a GREAT open source audio capture and editing program) causes it to vapor lock. So I get the video onto my computer and I'm able to strip the audio off using NeroVision, part of the Nero 8 (They are now on release 9) suite I purchased a while back. Seriously, half of the software I use to do stuff has never been shrink wrapped and I'm just fine with that.

Once I have the audio separated, I can massage it with Audacity. In this case I didn't too too much. I turned a mono recording into stereo, added a touch of reverb and a smidge of delay to thicken it up a bit. I hit it with some noise reduction to get rid of the sounds of, in no particular order: airplanes, birds, computer fans and the work crew putting in a new telephone pole across the street. However, there is one sound I cannot get rid of. If you listen real closely, you can hear my watch band rattling during some of my more energetic moments. I'm afraid that I'm just going to have to take it off from now on.

This song was written by Buddy Holly and was performed by him and his band The Crickets. Even though I only sing two verses, it originally had three. There are also some minor changes in the words here and there. Here are the original lyrics of the song.

I'm gonna tell you it's gonna be
You're gonna give your love to me
I'm gonna love you night and day
you know my lovin' not fade away
you know my lovin' not fade away

My love is bigger than a Cadillac
I try to show it but you drive me back
Your love for me has gotta be real
For you to know just how I feel
A love that's real not fade away

I'm gonna tell you it's gonna be
You're gonna give your love to me
A love to last more than one day
A love that's love'll not fade away
A love that's love'll not fade away
